Captain Ben Paschal guides on the Lower Laguna Madre in deep south Texas where he targets redfish, speckled trout, and tarpon.
Paschal’s career in the fly fishing world began at the ripe age of 18 while working at a fly shop in his home state of Texas. The following year he began his guiding career at lodges around the world and eventually worked in famous destinations such as Chilean Patagonia; Bristol Bay, Alaska, and Argentine Tierra Del Fuego. In between his guiding seasons in Alaska and South America he began exploring the coastal waters in his home state of Texas. Since guiding his first clients in 2007, he is now guiding 250-270 days a year in Texas and Louisiana. He calls the beautiful waters of the Lower Laguna Madre in deep south Texas his home waters. He spends a couple months each winter poling his clients around the Louisiana Marsh targeting bull Redfish as well. He lives in Port Mansfield, Texas with his wife and dogs where they also own and operate several waterfront rentals where his clients stay. Additionally, Paschal has been included in magazines such as Fly Fisherman, Tail, Southwest Fly Fishing, The Drake, Stonefly, Fly Tyer, Texas Sporting Journal, The Dallas Morning News, The Houston Chronicle, and The Austin-American Statesman.

  1. home water- Lower Laguna Madre in deep South Texas
  2. I love the amplitude smooth redifsh warm 8 weight line for sight casting redfish in shallow water. You can throw the entire line if needed but also it can easily handle short quick 15 foot casts. That line lives on the skiff. In Louisiana I will sometimes upsize to a 10 weight Amplitude smooth redfish warm. Gulfside fishing for tarpon, jacks, bonita, king mackerel, etc, I like the Sonar 10-12 WF intermediate lines. This will give you a little more flexibility when dealing with a water column 12-30 feet in our area.
  3. anywhere warm and salty. Luckily, we don’t need a passport for redfish so don’t need to travel much for them! I love hosting an annual trip to Espiritu Santo Bay in Mexico. Super slam opportunities daily…. Also, Exmouth Australia and other exotic South Pacific locations have been on my radar for several years now. That said, I miss swinging the spey for steelhead and also I need to take my wife and introduce her to Patagonian trout where I spent several years guiding.
  4. never trust the weatherman, never trust a politician, never trust a fishing guide
