A native of Southern California, Glenn was introduced to surf fishing as a child by his father. Every Sunday, from Morro Bay down to San Onofre, they caught their own bait and targeted everything from striped bass to barred perch to corbina. Reading about fly fishing in Field and Stream, Glenn soon learned basic fly casting and tying at world famous Long Beach Casting Club, He was ten. A local pond provided endless joy fooling bluegill, crappie and bass. Almost five decades later following a rewarding career as an architect, he sought new challenges. Taking all of those cherished surf and freshwater lessons he built a very successful business “So Cal Flats Fishing Guide Service” teaching fly anglers the art of sightfishing in shallow surf for one of the world’s most challenging species, the California Corbina. Guiding highly skilled anglers from all over the globe, many agree after a day’ of stalking that they our “Ghost of the Coast” is as difficult if not worse than the very popular and highly coveted flats permit.
Loving all things fishing, Glenn also enjoys sharing his passion for our sport, filling his annual calendar with presentations and tying demonstrations to many of the fly fishing stores serving Southern California including Fishermen’s Spot, Bob Marriott’s Fly Fishing Store, and Orvis Pasadena. Those presentations, whether in person or via Zoom, “Ghost of the Coast – Sightfishing for California Corbina” and “Midnight Madness – The Hunt for Trophy Calico Bass” have been received by virtually every fly fishing club from Santa Barbara to San Diego too.
An extension of his teachings, Glenn has written and collaborated on a number of feature articles for such notable publications as Fly Fisherman, Saltwater Sportsman, California Fly Fisher and Western Outdoor News.
Borne from an affinity for sightfishing, he has ventured abroad for exotic species such as Baja Mexico roosterfish dorado and tuna, Belizean permit tarpon and bonefish, Christmas Island giant trevally triggerfish and milkfish, Amazon peacock bass wolffish and arowana, and Argentinian golden dorado pacu and pira pita. Fishing over 200 days annually, Glenn also enjoys the challenge of stalking finicky hard-fighting carp in metropolitan Los Angeles to massive Montana impoundments to the narrow canals of Japan. Developed specifically for pursuing these “golden bones” in all conditions, his extremely popular Loco Moco carp fly has followers in virtually every state that contains carp as well throughout Asia, Europe, and Australia.
With a background in long range big game fishing, he also enjoys venturing well offshore, seeking hard-fighting pelagic and coastal species, all from his 20’ Edgewater center console. An immense aquatic resource, his coastal stretch of the Eastern Pacific Ocean supports a very healthy population of California Yellowtail, Pacific Bonito, Kelp Bass (aka calico bass), and Pacific Barracuda, as well as seasonal visitors such as yellowfin tuna and dorado, all eager to slam a well presented fly.
Having landed 123 species on fly to date during his aforementioned international and domestic travels, he is perhaps most proud of his IGFA Fly Rod World Records for California Corbina on 4#, 12# and 16# tippet, all captured and released on his local beach.
When not fishing, Glenn and his wife of 36 years, Mona, enjoy traveling to Japan to visit their son Randy and family, spending time outdoors with their two dogs Kai and Mac, and strolling the sand near their coastal home in Huntington Beach.
- Home water? We live in Huntington Beach California, central to some of the finest fly fishing on the left coast. With a temperate climate, we are blessed with year-round saltwater fly opportunities offering everything from summer sightfishing for California Corbina (our backyard bones) to inshore Winter calico bass fishing to offshore pelagic yellowtail bonito and tuna. In addition to our amazing local fisheries.
- What 2-3 lines do you use the most and why? When aboard my Edgewater center console, I absolutely love the Titan Sonar Sink 3 / 5 / 7 fly lines. Whether fishing jagged coastal rockpiles or deep offshore reefs surrounding Catalina Island, castability and a fast sink rate really help to cut through the swell, surge, and foam, placing our flies well down in the zone. Though originally designed for lake fishing, the full sink Sonar Stillwater Seamless Density Sink 5 / Sink 7 absolutely shines in coastal surf! Our coveted California Corbina aka “Ghost of the Coast” is summertime available, where it sneaks onto ankle-deep flats to feed on sand crabs. Extremely spooky and shy, this fly line loads my Helios 3 6 weight perfectly then lands very softly, lies on the bottom eliminating current-bending wave drag, and can detect the softest of eats due to its no-stretch core. My clients and I swear by it! Whether in Baja Mexico chasing roosterfish, golden dorado on the Parana River, or peacock bass deep in the Brazilian Amazon, the Sonar Titan Tropical Clear Tip is always my choice. This fly line has the formulation necessary to prevent wilting in extreme conditions, temperatures often in excess of 90 degrees. Speed drifting past sunken treetops or leading large fast-moving surface feeding fish requires booming out quick accurate shots with a minimal of false casts, often in the wind. Without question, this is THE line for the job. Durability has been outstanding as well, as I have been using the same line for the past three years, landing countless big fish, with absolutely zero failures.
- Where would you most like to fish? That is a very difficult question to answer. I have had the great fortune to travel to many of the “bucket list” places that seem to pop up on everyone’s list but there is one place in particular that has piqued my interest for some time. With it’s fearsome set of fangs, the prehistoric payara of Colombia has to be at the top of places that I am plan to visit soon. A close second might be the huge tarpon of Costa Rica or huge Arapaima in Brazil.
- Two Truths and a Lie. I absolutely love being a supporting husband to my amazing wife Mona and grandpa to my son Randy and Daughter-in-law Kei’s two wonderful grandsons, Towa and Koa. I am extremely grateful to have Scientific Anglers’ share my passion as I help grow our wonderful sport of fly fishing, whether through presentations and seminars for our local fly clubs and stores, hosting fly fishing trips, or writing magazine articles. The lie? Heck, that’s real easy, I never ever “trout set”!
