Troy has over 40 years of fly fishing experience, and Kingsport, Tennessee is where he calls
home. Located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, Northeast Tennessee is truly a fly
fishing paradise. Most recently, in 2015, Troy was appointed the position of head guide for The
South Holston River Company, based in Piney Flats, Tennessee. “The South Holston and
Watauga tail waters maintain a consistent water temperature, and that gives anglers the
opportunity to get on the water and catch amazing wild brown trout, and rainbow trout, nearly
any day of the year.”
The fish nearest and dearest to Troy’s heart is the Smallmouth Bass. Most off days, that’s
where you’ll find him, throwing big flies to big bronze backs. “I more or less grew up fishing the
waters of Wisconsin, and bass can be found almost anywhere the water warms up enough for
them to thrive.”
  1. Home water? South Holston River, Watauga River, Nolichucky River, Clinch River
  2. What 2-3 lines do you use the most and why? My favorite line for fishing dries to trout is the SA Amplitude Smooth Trout in either a 4 or 5 weight. The longer front taper allows for a delicate presentation, and the line floats higher than any I’ve ever seen. The AST Plus is so slick, it turns average rods into cannons, I see amazing increases in distance with my clients. They can reach more fish with confidence, makes spooky trout think the fly is the real thing, and greatly improves successful hookups with the braided multifilament core. For Nymphing/heavy rigs, I like the SA Amplitude Infinity in a 5 or 6 weight. That line reallyturns over heavier indicator rigs loaded with split shot and multiple flies very well. It also is exceptional with streamers, and the longer belly section makes mending effortless on the water. My favorite Bass line is the SA Amplitude Titan Long. All I can say is, WOW! I fish 7 and 8 weights for bass, and I’m able to lift 50+ feet on a backcast and lay it back down straight andaccurately. I haven’t found a bug, popper or wiggle minnow I can’t turn over, no matter how windy. Amazing stuff!
  3. Where would you most like to fish?
To the Amazon and fish for Peacock Bass. I think that would be absolutely amazing!
  4. Two Truths and a Lie.
I have been a career firefighter for 26 years. I served in the U.S. Army for 6 years, 82nd Airborne Division, 1987-1993, I love vegetables, and wish people would all be vegan
