Ambassador
For more than fifteen years, photographer and writer Jess McGlothlin has worked in the fly-fishing industry in several countries. Her work has taken her around the globe, leading her to chase fish on six continents, and while on assignment in the past years she’s learned how to throw spears at coconuts in French Polynesia, dodge saltwater crocodiles in Cuba, heli-fish Amazon headwaters, and eat all manner of unidentifiable food. She still enjoys airports.
- Home water? Montana… old Montana. I grew up rural in the northwest part of the Big Sky State, but worked on the Missouri River early in my career and it feels a bit like home. Currently I live in Missoula, though airports might as well be my official “home base.”
- What 2-3 lines do you use the most and why? I’ve been super impressed with the Mastery Jungle/Titan; I’ve fished it for golden dorado in several countries and it’s a workhorse for quick, pounding shots with heavy flies. The Sonar Titan Pelagic has also been an absolute workhorse for bluewater species off the coast of Colombia recently, including tuna and big snapper. Both lines are “ride or dies” for me now. And, of course, the Amplitude Smooth Trout line is a winner when I’m at home fishing in Montana.
- Where would you most like to fish? My travel is always dictated by where the jobs are! And those photo and trip hosting jobs have taken me to some very special places—I’m very grateful. On the list still are the Seychelles, more in Africa and the South Pacific, and some first-world work in Europe.
- Two Truths and a Lie. 1) I used to be a competitive equestrian, a career which took me to work in Calgary and Sweden before I turned 18. 2) I’ve got more than 20 scars from various photo jobs around the world. 3) I once lived an entire winter season working in a coffee shop and crafting baked goods in a ski town.
