Tim Flagler is the owner of Tightline Productions, L.L.C., a video production company located in Califon, NJ. Although he produces video programs over a wide range of topics, his specialty is fly fishing. Tim is a well-known fly tying instructor. His YouTube videos are some of the best in the business and his YouTube channel, tightlinevideo currently has over 123,000 subscribers and 40 million views.  Almost every week he produces a new fly tying or “how to” video which appear not only on his YouTube channel but on Midcurrent and the Orvis News fly fishing blog as well. They’re also featured on Trout Unlimited’s national website and in the Orvis Learning Center. In addition, he has a regular column “Beginner’s Masterclass with Tim Flagler” in Fly Tyer magazine, which selected Tim as their “Fly Tyer of the Year”  in their Winter 2022 issue. Many of Tim’s tying videos take the viewer well beyond just the tying of the fly and show what it looks like underwater, what natural it represents and how it can be fished.

Tim’s a fixture at the Fly Fishing Shows – giving presentations, teaching classes and often as a Featured Tier. He does monthly “Tie-Off’s” with Tom Rosenbauer (Orvis) and, recently, Cheech Pierce (Fly Fish Food) as well. He enjoys guiding year round for South Branch Outfitters (formerly Shannon’s Fly & Tackle)in Califon, NJ and hosts annual trips to Patagonia in the spring and to the Kootenai River in MT  & Northern British Columbia in the summer. He has also started hosting several trips within the year to Spruce Creek, PA and to the Erie area for steelhead in early December.

  1. 1) Home water?  South Branch of the Raritan River.
    2) What 2-3 lines do you use the most and why? My most used line is the Amplitude Textured Infinity in 5 weight, it’s kind of my daily driver and well-suited to the waters I regularly fish. The line just does everything right, from short roll casts to bombs, yet with both a delicate and accurate presentation. I simply couldn’t ask anything more from a trout line.
I’m going to cheat on my second favorite line and say the Spey Lite Heads in both Skagit and Scandi for 3 and 4 weight trout spey rods. To me, there’s nothing quite as fun and relaxing as swinging soft hackles and small streamers for trout. I find myself changing between these two heads frequently based on water conditions. Used in conjunction with a variety of tips and leaders, I’m well-equipped for a tremendous range of fishing situations.
    3) Where would you most like to fish? This one’s super tough as I really enjoy the variety that fly fishing has to offer. But, I guess if there was just one place, it would be the rivers of Northern Patagonia – the Limay Medio, Chimehuin, the Collon Cura, the Malleo, the Alumine, etc. Whether I’m floating, wading, fishing dries or swinging streamers – it’s all good. Add in the food, the people and the staggeringly beautiful scenery, it’s simply the best.
    4) Two truths and a lie: I’m a distant relative of the Jersey Devil, one of my ancestors settled most of South Florida and I don’t like Hawkins Cheezies.
