Rick started working in the fly fishing industry back in the mid 1980’s, and has been lucky enough to have some of the legends of our art form as mentors. Through their help, Rick worked in many aspects of the business from, flyshop employee, to a 25 year guiding career guiding in four western states, Colorado, Montana, Utah and Wyoming. The rivers he worked are on most peoples bucket list. Rick was lucky enough to be invited to guide in the Jackson Hole One Fly for 10 years and also guided in the World Fly Fishing Championships. Rick also hosted Flyfishing America on ESPN and traveled and fished in many states, and different watersheds across the country.
Rick is also very passionate about helping our watersheds to have clean, cold water and a healthy environment to flow through! He sits on many boards including the Upper Yellowstone Watershed Group, Wild Livelyhoods and most recently The Salmonfly Project.
  1. Home water? Yellowstone River, Paradise Valley Spring Creeks & Yellowstone National Park.
  2. What 2-3 lines do you use the most and why?  Depending on the day and location: On the Yellowstone, I mostly use the Amplitude Smooth Infinity along with the Frequency Intermediate, I prefer to fish the hatches on the river and with these two lines, I can cover most conditions and stages of a hatch.
Fishing the Spring Creeks requires a stealthy approach and I like the Mastery double taper, as it is true to line size and the taper allows for easier mending and the dark willow gives a camouflaged presentation.
In Yellowstone Park, I again rely on the Mastery DT and Frequency Intermediate when exploring the park’s many hatches. In the fall when fish run up the Madison to over winter, I enjoy using the SA Spey Lite with my two handed trout Speys.
Swinging soft hackles with this set up, can make for wonderful days on the water.
  3. Where would you most like to fish? The Alta river in Norway! As long as I can remember this river has captivated my soul. I’m of Norwegian decent and the Alta is one of the very best Atlantic Salmon fisheries in the world. No Brainer!
  4. Two Truths and a Lie.
I hosted Flyfishing America on ESPN. (2) I love Euro-nymphing (3) A fishing partner and I caught the same fish on one cast while swinging wool head sculpins in Russia.
