My name is Marcos Hlace, I am an Argentinian fly-fishing guide, traveling almost year-round in pursuit of various adventures and, of course, fish. Throughout my career, I have fished and guided in many incredible locations, including my home waters in Patagonia Argentina and New Zealand, for trout, Tierra del Fuego for sea brown trout, Amazon Brazil for peacock bass, arapaimas, vampire fish, wolf fish, and numerous jungle species. I’ve also explored the waters of Iceland in search of atlantic salmon.
I am a certified fly casting instructor (Fly Fishers International) and I hope to dedicate more time to teaching in the future, as it is a passion of mine alongside guiding. Over the past couple of years, photography and outdoor activities have also become integral to my work, allowing me to capture the beauty of nature and fishing.
- Home water?
- My favorite fishing spot is the Limay River in Bariloche, Patagonia, Argentina. This area is one of the region’s many treasures, known for its world-class migratory brown and rainbow trout. It’s an ideal place for swinging flies—truly a gem.
- What 2-3 lines do you use the most and why?
- Jungle: I use the Mastery Tropical/Jungle Titan series with a #8 rod in the jungle. This setup allows for fewer false casts and quick delivery, perfect for targeting fast-moving predators. It’s versatile enough to switch between big poppers and voluminous streamers for peacock bass, bicudas, or even vampire fish when conditions are right for top water. Sonar Tropical Jungle Custom Tip, This line is ideal for targeting vampire fish and arapaimas when sinking is necessary. It adapts just by cutting the tip from a 7 to 15-weight setup and, once submerged, stays near the bottom—where big fish live. right?
- Freshwater: For freshwater fishing, I prefer a floating Scandi line for my two-handed rod #8. There’s nothing more enjoyable than casting this line with long leaders to swing for migratory salmonids. It’s also easy to pair with Sonar leaders for deeper areas of the water column if it’s needed.
- Where would you most like to fish?
- I dream of fishing in northern Patagonia at the beginning of summer. This time of year brings dragonfly hatches, and who doesn’t love casting large dry flies for rainbows, brook trout, and browns? It takes me back to my memories of fishing during my early days in this beautiful sport.
- Two Truths and a Lie.
- I love fly fishing because it’s a never-ending learning experience. From tying my own flies and crafting my own boat to mastering casting techniques and pursuing new species, there’s always something new to explore.
- I’ve never caught a GT (Giant Trevally), but it’s on my bucket list, and I usually make it happen at any cost.
- My fly-fishing tackle box is always beautifully organized. (You should ask my helper about that!)
