My name is Tess and I never planned on being a fly fishing guide. Now almost a decade in, I’m an overly committed trout bum guiding for wild trout in central Pennsylvania and southwest Montana. As a founding member of the US Women’s Fly Fishing Team, I’ve competed in world championships in Norway, British Columbia, and the Czech Republic. I try to learn every day I’m on the river, paying a little extra attention to invertebrates. Entomology is the foundation of our sport and our knowledge and appreciation of that is seemingly becoming more absent. As a guide and educator, it is important for me to connect people to trout AND to the bugs that catch them. Most importantly, my Newfoundland Eight loves my career choice and if there’s a fish rising he’ll find it.
- Home water?
- It doesn’t matter where I am in the world, I always miss my home river, Penns Creek.
- What 2-3 lines do you use the most and why?
- Amplitude Textured Trout for dry fly fishing, duh. The Euro Tactical Nymph Mono for when the fish aren’t rising and well, rules are rules. And last, but not least the Sonar Stillwater Clear Camo for when I need some fish-finding versatility.
- Where would you most like to fish?
- Anywhere I have the opportunity to go next! Which right now is joining my best friends in PNW steelhead country with all of our dogs.
- Two Truths and a Lie.
- I won a world championship session just by fishing dry flies.
- My dog, Eight is made up of three distinct types of dubbing.
- I’m a cat person.
