Skylar grew up between some of Michigan’s most well-known fly fishing rivers and Florida’s gulf coast, but fully began diving into her fishing addiction around small mountain streams in Arizona. While living in Arizona, she hand-built a teardrop trailer that she traveled the country in, and spent most of her early 20’s exploring rivers in the West. After spending a winter camping and fishing out of a backpack through Patagonia, she returned to Montana to begin guiding. She spent her summers rowing rivers between Montana and Wyoming, and winters guiding in Chilean Patagonia. In 2017, she acquired her captain’s license and began guiding in Alaska where she and her husband were married and continued to return to for the next 7 summers. After their long season of guiding, they would spend their winters traveling or beating up a Jon boat looking for redfish in Florida. In 2024 Skylar and her husband decided to take their years of experience in Alaska and build their own lodge. They spent the entire summer flying out materials and building cabins themselves at a remote location within Katmai National Park. They are looking forward to welcoming their first guests next summer while they finish building the lodge.
- Home water? Bristol Bay, Alaska
- What 2-3 lines do you use the most and why? Skagit Spey 450 grain and Amplitude Smooth Trout 6wt.
- Where would you most like to fish? My favorite experiences are always with friends, the location doesn’t seem to matter as much lately. Since I spend a lot of time in the colder temperatures of Alaska, I typically prefer to choose warmer destinations. I was very spoiled last winter on the beaches of Baja running after roosterfish and may never get enough of that. However, I would love to reconnect with an old friend who spends most of her days fishing in the jungle of Brazil.
- Two Truths and a Lie. My dog has traveled to 49 states, My hair is naturally pink, I learned to drive a manual in Buenos Aires.
