My Name is Matt Chatani, I’m a fly fishing guide on the Bow River in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. I was raised on the banks of the Bow stalking trout with my dad, who began his guiding career in the 80s well before I was born. Growing up around the guide scene I saw how much goes on behind the scenes, and it helped me make a seamless transition into guiding. When it was time for me to choose between a real job or taking people fishing every day… it was an easy choice. I now co-own Trout Chasers River Company with my Dad, where despite our short season, I spend over 125 days a year guiding and around 1600 hours on the water each season. If I’m not guiding, I’m filming, teaching, testing gear or testing theories. In the off season you’ll find me holding up the counter in Fish Tales Fly Shop or on the lake playing hockey.

  1. Home water?  Bow River, Alberta
  2. What 2-3 lines do you use the most and why?   Amplitude textured Anadro indicator – It’s almost as if this line was specifically designed for the Bow River. it handles a wide variety of rigs, it shoots well, carries well, and mends well. Giving myself and my clients, ultimate control and the ability to fish at ranges other lines just aren’t built for. This line has become my choice for floating line streamers and the bright indicator tip helps me gauge exactly where my clients flies are.Sonar titan sink tip mini – perfect for banging the banks and fishing shallow flats with more buoyant flies. This line doesn’t dig in too much and drag bottom like longer sinking tips, but can get the fly into the kill zone and keep it there for a good amount of the retrieve. Paired with a longer leader and slightly heavier fly it fishes with similar control to a floating line, but allows for slightly longer retrieves at depth before the fly starts to ascend.Amplitude textured MPX – this is the line of choice for all my foam bugs, dry dropper, and even a handful of my sight fishing applications. Plenty of power to carry bushy dry dropper rigs and It loads most rods quickly with one back cast.
  3. Where would you most like to fish?  Lately, I’ve been eyeing up Magdalena Bay in Mexico. I’m always itching for my annual Tarpon trip or another visit back to the Louisiana Marsh. Although If I had one more day to fish, it would be on the Bow, there’s no better trout fishing on earth.
  4. Two Truths and a Lie.
I played college soccer, I’m obsessed with gear and own over 100 fly rods. I’ve caught multiple 10 pound brown trout.
