Scientific Anglers Skagit Short Spey Head
A Skagit Head by definition is a short, compact line designed for use with two handed rods, sinking tips, and large flies. When compared to our standard Skagit offering, Skagit Short will be 2-3’ shorter depending on weight. Why do we need to make an already short line even shorter? There are a few reasons, but the most compelling are shorter rods, casting ability, and payload.
Spey rods, especially Skagit specific Spey rods, have been getting shorter on average, think less than 12’. By pairing that short rod with a shorter Skagit line, your casting stroke can remain largely unchanged. Shorter heads are also going to be easier to pick up for a novice angler. Even if you happen to have a more standard 12-13.5’ rod, but are new to Skagit style casting, this shorter version will be easier to get started with.
By compacting the same mass over a shorter span, we have also increased the payload capacity. Skagit Short has the ability to turn over heavier tips, up to T18 if needed. The extra power will also translate down through the tip and allows larger, heavier flies to be cast.
Skagit Short is a great option if you are a novice caster, just purchased a short spey rod, or simply want more power.
